CHAPTER 11:INTRO TO ORGANIC CHEMISTRY:SATURATED HYDROCARBONS
CHAPTER 11:PRE-TEST
1. Predict the shape of the molecule at the *'d atom:
a. H2Br2C*
b.CH3O*H
2. Name the following molecules:
a.(CH3)2-CH-CH2-CH2-CH3 b. CH3-(CH2)5-CHCl-CH3
3. Draw the following molecules:
a. 1,2-diethylcyclohexane b. 1,1-dichlorethane
4. Draw the structural isomers for molecular formula C4H10
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Review the VSEPR model, predict the shapes of covalent molecules, their polarities, and water solubility.
2. Distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds.
3. Write condensed and structural formulas for saturated hydrocarbons, including cyclic compounds.
4. Learn the basic rules of the IUPAC Nomenclature System, apply to alkanes and cyclic alkanes.
5. Draw constitutional (structural) isomers given a molecular formula.
6.Be able to distinguish isomers, identical compounds, and unrelated compounds given structural formulas.
7. Draw and recognize cis and trans isomers in cyclic alkanes.
8. Know chemical and physical properties of alkanes.
9. Be able to distinguish between and discuss the causes and possible consequences of the "Greenhouse Effect" and "Ozone Depletion."
READING:pp.86-90 (review VSEPR), 140 B(Greenhouse Effect), Handout in class (Ozone Depletion), 11-1 TO 11-24 (pp243-266)
SELF-STUDY:pp 244-246, 256-258 (review by building models)
READING TO SKIP: None PROBLEMS: 11.2, 11.6, 11.12, 11.28, 11.32, 11.34, 11.52, 11.60, CT1, CT2
A chapter outline will not be put on the WEB. We will work from now on with a hand-out to be filled in during class on important topics.
